Last year, I had the pleasure of attending my first FAIRLADY Best of Beauty Awards. Having started a local competition at one of my former publications, I’m pretty passionate about local products and understand the time and admin that goes in to organising something of this calibre.

As a locally produced magazines, FAIRLADY has always been one that I respect and admire so the fact that it has now launched its own Best of Beauty competition is something that gets me really excited.

The competition, now in its third year, is judged by a panel of local experts and this year’s celebrity judges have been announced. Grooming guru, Thulane Hadebe, and local TV personality Jo-Ann Strauss will join the judging team to give their opinions and feedback on this year’s entrants. Other judges include the magazine’s editor Suzy Brokensha; FAIRLADY’s junior beauty editor Kelli Clifton; Carlton Hair salon owner and celebrity hair stylist, David Gillson; make-up artist Linda O’Connell; and dermatologist Dr Dagmar Whitaker.

Says Brokensha, “The awards serve a valuable function to consumers, who face an ever-increasing assortment of beauty products from which to choose. With so many products making so many big promises, consumers really rely on the testing we do for them, because they know it’s both stringent and honest. Our readers are happy to spend money on products they know will deliver on their promises, but – like all of us – they want to know for sure that they’re making the right choice. That’s where FAIRLADY Best of Beauty comes in: they view our list of award-winning beauty products in the same way as they would view personal advice from a highly trusted beauty consultant”.

Last year, several new categories joined the competition with the addition of Best Beauty Blogger, Best Newcomer Product, Best Iconic Product and Best Nail Product. Top winners included: Optiphi 2 in 1 Facial Cleanser, Moisture Control Light, which won the title of Best SA Product; Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair, which was named Most Iconic Product; and beauty blogger Victoria Tatham for her blog www.kissblushandtell.com.

The 15 categories in this year’s awards include: Skincare, Body, Colour (Foundation, Mascara, Lips, Cheeks, Eyes), Hands & Feet, Sun, Fragrance (Women’s fragrance only), Nails, Hair, Men (including Men`s Fragrances), Anti-ageing, Tools (Face, Body & Hair), Best South African Product, Best Iconic Product, Best Newcomer Product and Best Beauty Blog.

Brokensha encourages newcomer brands as well as established ones to enter as she says it’s a great way to make a splash in a fiercely competitive market. Most categories are divided into Value and Luxury sub-categories to ensure the fairest assessment of all entries. Beauty products valued at less than R250 are categorised as Value, and those valued from R251-R499 are classified as Luxury. In addition, there is a Premium sub-category for products valued at R500 or more in the categories of Skincare, Body, Men’s and Anti-Ageing.

The winners of the 2013 FAIRLADY Best of Beauty Awards will be announced in the November 2013 print edition of the magazine, on sale from 21 October. There will also be a reader competition with one lucky reader walking away with all the top products featured in the awards.
