Winter trend alert!

Hmmm…anyone else starting to feel the cold a lot more than last week? The evenings are undoubtedly cold and I’m always tottering around the house bundled up in jerseys and socks. Luckily, I love winter! I’ve been stalking the online stores and actually reading the mailers from local retails so there’s another trend I’ve picked up on that I want to share. Quilted!

From shoes to jackets, and I even saw a pair of “quilted joggers”, there’s clearly a trend going on here. I’m very selective about this trend and be careful not to overdo it. Head-to-toe quilts? Not great. One item mixed with another texture? Totes on trend (see, I’ve even been practising my fashion speak for you).

What do you think? Something you’re into or giving it a skip?

And….I’m back!

Ok, I’ve finally gotten a handle on things and found a smidgen of free time to catch up on all my emails and blogging. I’ve got some new product reviews, a super fun make-up workshop and decor ideas to share with you next week, but since it’s a Friday and we’re finally through all those short weeks and long weekends, I thought I’d share something I figured out recently.

im-back

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending one of my varsity friend’s weddings. It was a stunning event at the gorgeous Alpine Heath Hotel in the Drakensberg. We made a little road trip weekend of it, along with two of my other varsity friends who flew in for the occasion.

We had an absolute blast: the venue was serene, the bride looked like a Disney princess, the groom epitomised suave (arriving in a helicopter), the food was delicious and the DJ had me on the dance floor until I practically had to be carried back to our chalet afterwards. All in all, it was one of the best weddings I’ve ever attended. Really romantic and super personal. Even though I haven’t seen the bride and our friends in years, it really felt like not a single day had passed since our last escapade together.

When I got back and went through my emails, I came across something that had been bugging me all weekend. When I go away, it’s usually for a holiday, so I take along the bare minimal in terms of make-up and accessories. My plans are usually to relax and let my hair down (and give my skin a break from the multitude of products I use). I do always take along something smartish, just in case – but it’s often a little black dress that I can dress up with a pair of earrings and heels if needed. This time, I wasn’t only going to spend the majority of my time away dressed up, but because I was so swamped in the weeks before, the first time I even thought about what to wear was the night before we left.

So there I was at 4am trying to pack everything and the kitchen sink into the teeniest little suitcase because the others had brought along normal, more-than-one-night luggage with them from CT and Aus. My car isn’t that big and since I was only staying for one night, I really only needed one outfit, my pjs, and something to travel home in the next day. But when you don’t plan things, you get Panicked Nix. We were trying hard to get out the door (and I’m already not the friendliest person first thing in the morning, let alone at some ungodly hour on a Saturday) and I kept remembering things I needed to pack.

“Hair straightener?”

“Got it!”

“Hair dryer?”

“Packed!”

“What about a plug for them?”

“Oh. Good point. Please grab one from the kitchen.”

“Make-up?”

“Check.”

“Heels?”

“Double check!”

“Jewellery?”

“Jewellery? JEWELLERY! I can’t believe I almost forgot the jewellery!”

I don’t wear jewellery that often. I tend to play with it and fidget so I keep it down to a few select pieces that I love. But this wasn’t any ordinary day – this was a wedding! I needed a little more fancy than usual and because I’d ended up packing a few dresses, I needed a number of items to try out and see what worked best. And you know what I realised? Although I have make-up bags for any occasion, the one thing I don’t have is a jewellery traveller. I’ve always wanted one and remember when my mom used to unroll hers when we were kids so we could “ohhh” and “ahhh” and ask thousands of questions about the story behind each item. (I only ever wear jewellery that has a story so most of my favourites are gifts from special occasions.)

Excuse the quality - it's a photo of a photo. We're still waiting for the camera owner to upload these!

Being the ingenious person that I am, I made do with a large vitamin bottle and hoped that my favourite necklaces wouldn’t get too tangled. Luckily, everything was fine and we managed to get dressed and ready without any major wardrobe drama.

But when I got back, I started thinking. It’s something I really want and need to put on a wish list somewhere, but where on earth can you find a beautiful, good quality jewellery traveller these days? I don’t think it’s something everyone wants and considering my hassle to track down a travel wallet I actually like, I wasn’t too optimistic.

Luckily, my inbox held the solution. There’s a nifty little gifting company that creates the most gorgeous ranges called CaraMia. They’ve just launched the cutest range of jewellery cases and I now have my eye on at least three. The new Zoe collection has a duck egg exterior with polka dots on the inside giving it a lovely ladylike feel. The oval traveller is just R343 while the oval jewel case is R459. My personal favourite, however, is the cosmetic jewel case which has a nifty little zip up pouch at the bottom to store your jewellery and a full size cosmetic pouch to keep your favourite must-have beauty items with you. I’m super excited about this and can’t wait for the next destination wedding to come up so I can make tons of excuses and grab one of the purchases online.

My Winter Wardrobe Wishlist

Winter is coming (told you there’d be more of that) and one of my favourite things about this season is the fashion! Boots and scarves and gloves and more boots and tights with dresses and coats and…did I mention boots? There are a few trends that we’re expecting to see pop up in stores over the next few weeks – some of them have already made their ways into stores and closets across the country, but I’ve been holding on to thoughts of summer a little longer than usual so I think it’s time for a round up of what I’m hoping to update my wardrobe with this winter.

1. Tartan dress: Checks are everywhere this season and I love this dress, (R395) from spree.co.za

2. Cosy knits: purple knit (R340) and heart knit (R595), both from spree.co.za

3. Denim chambray. I love the simplicity of these shirts. They’re super casual and can be dressed up for a night out or for work. Light denim polka dot, R119,25 from Mr Price and Long-sleeved chambray shirt, R350 from Woolworths.

4. Flat over-the-knee boots. These Audrey boots from Witchery (R2 099) @ Woolworths have featured on a number of local blogs – you can see why.

5. Brown boots. I’ve been stalking these Tory Burch boots for weeks on Pinterest. Luminance stocks Tory Burch. It’s basically a sign.

The Oscars: who wore what

This has taken me a little longer than most to get round to doing, partly because of a busy week, partly because I wanted it to be a little more than “I like this” and “I don’t like that”. Here’s my round up of the red carpet fashions, which in my opinion was far more interesting than the actual Academy Awards. My two opinions on the show? Yes, I’m also disappointed that Leo was once again overlooked, but I’d prefer him to win based on his performance instead of just to rectify the injustice. And The Selfie That Broke Twitter was the best thing to come out of the Oscars. Ever. The End.

The Best-Dressed Baby Bumps

I know Elsa got a lot of flack for her choice (she’s the Mrs Chris Hemsworth, FYI), which I think was completely uncalled for. The colour is beautiful and instead of trying to conceal her bump (ala Kerry Washington), she’s actually highlighted it. And honestly, if you’re dumb enough to criticise the woman married to Thor, you deserve to be smashed with Mjölnir. The winner for best-dressed baby bump for me, however, is Olivia Wilde.

All That Glitters

Gold, sparkly sequin-y things seemed to be quite popular. I reckon it’s because of the metallics trends we’ve been seeing in beauty and fashion. I do love the sleek, elegant look of the dresses worn by Angie, Jessica and Jennifer – these are all a win for me.

Pretty and Pale

Another trend I picked up on was the abundance of pretty, pale and pink dresses. These are just a few of the selection and my favourite is Guliana Rancic. She looks like a fairy princess in this tulle creation. I can see wedding gown designers using these for inspiration next season.

The Uninspired

I have a great deal of respect for these women. If I could come back in another life, I’d pick Anne Hathaway hands down – she always plays the best roles: a princess, catwoman, Jane Austen, Fantine, an assistant at Vogue. But this dress is basically the darker sister to what she wore last year (the pink halter) and I thought it was a bad choice then. They look fine, but I think they played it a little too safe this year.

Golden Oldies

Showing up the Pretty Young Things, this year’s more seasoned actresses really brought out all the stops and showed that just because you’re the other side of 40, doesn’t mean you have to dress down. I don’t love the dangly tassles on Goldie’s dress, but the rest of it is pure class.

Showstoppers

I love these. Everything about them is why I love the Oscars and the Oscars fashion. It’s the Awards ceremony where you don’t go too bold or too extreme, but rather focus on simple, classic cuts with one outstanding feature. An Oscar dress has to be memorable and, for me, these are the ones I’ll be daydreaming about for years to come.

On The Fence

I’m not quite sure what to do with these. I have the biggest girl crush on JLaw at the moment (who doesn’t?!) so I’m rather disappointed. I adored her choice last year – now made famous as the dress she tripped in – and her Dior obsession fits in quite nicely with my own aesthetic. Emma always manages to look effortlessly elegant and so well-put-together. I like the dress; I don’t love it. Some people have raved about Julie Dephy’s choice – I can’t place my finger on it, but there’s something that doesn’t quite work for me.

My Favourite Things

These  ladies really blew me away with their choices. Amy Adams looked like the dress was an extension of her body and the colour perfectly suited her. Cate Blanchett is the only woman on earth with the skin tone to pull off this look. The dresses don’t just complement them, they emphasise the most beautiful aspects of these women. However, the winner for me this season, and not just because she nabbed the Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, was Lupita Nyong’o. She’s kind of the darling of Hollywood at the moment and on everyone’s best dressed list this year. Previously, her work included a short film. She’s been an unknown for many years, until her role in 12 Years A Slave, but I have a feeling we can expect to see a lot more from her. My favourite quote from the evening came from her during her acceptance speech. I found it again on Pinterest on the most gorgeous picture of her where her dress is billowing around her – it reminds me of myself as a child playing dress up, pretending I was a princess. After all, that’s what the Oscars is all about: living your dream.

Oscar dresses: what they wore

With the Academy Awards of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (yes, this is the official super long title that no-one ever uses), aka The Oscars, just around the corner (2 March, FYI), the one thing I always look forward to at any awards event is the fashion. Awards season sees me spending hours scrolling through galleries of dress after dress after dress. I love seeing who thinks something is a Hit or a Miss and often wonder to myself: “Why does your stylist hate you?”

Here’s a fabulous infographic on all the dresses worn by winners of the Best Actress Award over the years (Source: http://dreaming-in-pink-paradise.tumblr.com/post/77958953656).
